blends
‘nd’, ‘sk’, ‘mp’,
‘lt’, ‘nt’, ‘lk’,
‘st’, ‘ft’, ‘bl’,
‘cl’, ‘fl’, ‘gl’,
‘pl’, ‘sl’, ‘sc’,
‘sk’, ‘sm’, ‘sn’,
‘sp’, ‘st ’, ‘sw’,
‘tw’, ‘fr’, ‘scr’,
‘str’, ‘br’, ‘cr’,
‘dr’, ‘gr’, ‘pr’,
‘tr’, & ‘nk’; consonant
digraphs; double-vowel rule; bossy ‘e’
rule; soft ‘c’ and ‘g’;
long vowels; dipthongs; vowel sounds with “r”;
silent letters.
Students master common blends that come at the
beginning and ending of words. They then learn
double-letter sounds as well as the rules to tell
them when the vowels say their long sounds. Students
also learn the rule that teaches them when the
letter ‘c’ says ‘s’ as
in ‘cent’ and when the letter ‘g’
says ‘g’ as in ‘gent’.
After this, students learn increasingly complex
sounds (known as diphthongs). They also learn
the vowel sounds with ‘r’ and how
to recognise silent letters in words.
